Workers’ compensation reviews in PEI and Newfoundland

(Apr. 4/12) In workers’ compensation reviews, CRFA has emphasized restaurateurs can be significantly impacted by changes to the compensation system due to our industry’s labour-intensive nature.

What workers’ compensation should be
CRFA believes workers’ compensation is an insurance program – not a social program. The legislation should promote a culture of safety and compensate for loss of earnings. Initiatives should encourage individuals to return to work through early and timely intervention and income differential incentives.

What we want
On PEI, significant progress has been made over the years, and the system is fully funded with declining assessment rates. Care should be taken to maintain this system and protect key legislative thrusts such as the three-day waiting period. However, in Newfoundland, action must be taken to reduce assessments rates and accident duration rates which continue to be the highest in Canada.
