Possible French signage rules in Quebec?

(Oct. 17/12) CRFA has been working on finding solutions ahead of potential French signage legislation in Quebec. The Office québécois de la langue française (OLF) may ask businesses to register any new stores in Quebec using a generic approach e.g. “Electronic ABC Électronique.” Most of our members have not received any letters from OLF on their signage, but this could change with the PQ government – which has been extremely vocal about the state of the French language in Quebec businesses.

As a member of the committee set up by the Retail Council of Quebec, CRFA has been discussing strategies on how to approach this issue. A possible solution is to have new retail outlets and restaurants comply with the generic approach required by the OLF, while exempting existing businesses.

Our committee has requested a meeting with the OLF to learn more.
