Payroll taxes, liquor in Quebec pre-budget consultations
(Jan. 13/12) In December, CRFA met with the Finance Minister’s cabinet ahead of the upcoming provincial budget. CRFA asked government to address these issues:
- payroll taxes, which are 40 per cent higher in Quebec than the rest of Canada;
- alcohol volume rebates;
- ad valorem tax on alcohol, especially where restaurants still pay 50 per cent more than grocery and convenience stores on beer and wine;
- tax credit on payroll taxes paid on declared tips – this credit has been at 75 per cent since 2003, and CRFA is pushing to return it to 100 per cent; and
- tax credit on sales taxes paid on meals – this credit is at 50 per cent, and CRFA is asking to bring it back to 100 per cent.
