Newfoundland and Labrador to review minimum wage
(Aug. 23/12) Newfoundland and Labrador has created a Review Committee to look at its minimum wage, and is accepting operator feedback until Sept. 15, 2012.
The current wage stands at $10/hour. Operators are concerned by the prospect of future increases due to the labour-intensive nature of the restaurant industry, and the increase in minimum wage by more than 67 per cent over five years (between 2005 and 2010).
What we’re asking
CRFA is urging government to freeze the wage at the current level and to introduce:
- a training wage differential to recognize the high cost of training inexperienced employees; and
- a tip differential for servers in licensed establishments to recognize the significant income earned from gratuities; and
- an increase to the income tax Basic Personal Exemption of $4,000.
