New rules proposed for food sold in schools

(Dec. 12/12) Attention: School foodservice providers
CRFA is urging you to comment on the proposed ‘best-fit’ set of nutrient criteria for food and beverages sold in schools across Canada. The feedback focuses on the proposed rules for “choose most often” and “choose sometimes” foods and beverages, and is due by Jan. 11, 2013.

In 2010, the provinces and territories agreed to work together on a consistent set of criteria for food and beverages available to students in school settings. A federal/provincial/territorial working group was established to develop a proposed ‘best fit’ set of nutrient criteria of foods and beverages that could be used by jurisdictions as they revise or develop their school food guidelines or policies to create healthy eating environments for children and youth.

The working group spoke with stakeholders in October 2011 and November 2012, and is now seeking written feedback.
