Government black box on cash registers coming to Ontario?

(Apr. 23/12) Buried in last month’s Ontario budget is the proposal to adopt Quebec’s costly, government-regulated point-of-sale (POS) software to address fiscal evasion.

In a letter to Minister of Finance Dwight Duncan, CRFA argued it would be unfair to require the vast majority of tax-abiding businesses to purchase and maintain this expensive cash register monitoring equipment. We have been assured by officials that this isn’t government’s intent.  CRFA will hold the government to an approach that focuses on tax evaders only.
