Update: Pushing for fewer alcohol permits in Quebec

(Jul. 18/11) CRFA continues to call for an alcohol permit system that better reflects today’s restaurant, hotel and bar industry in Quebec.

In a June meeting with CRFA, the president of the Régie des alcools, des jeux et des courses du Québec (RAJCQ) Me Eleifson acknowledged the number of alcohol permits required by the foodservice industry is problematic. She will provide recommendations to Security Minister Robert Dutil, who is then responsible for action. CRFA will also meet with Minister Dutil in the summer.

The permit problem
Due to outdated legislation, Quebec licensees have faced an ongoing issue with the number of permits required – on average, a restaurant needs four to six alcohol permits. The legislation forces owners to get a permit per room in their restaurants, plus additional permits for patios and VLT machines. This permit requirement is difficult to manage and costly.
