CRFA urges consultation before changing Nova Scotia labour laws

(Nov. 26/10) CRFA appeared before the Law Amendments Committee of the Legislature to comment on Bill 100, Labour Board Act. 

CRFA took issue with several amendments buried in the Bill and introduced without any public consultation.  One issue viewed as payback to the union movement was the extension of successor rights to government employees.  This would mean private sector employers who take over a government service – such as the operation of a cafeteria or road maintenance – would be saddled with a public sector union.  Union contracts may also apply during the privatization of agencies such as the Nova Scotia Liquor Commission (NSLC).

CRFA had no concerns with the part of the Bill on the amalgamation of several boards.

CRFA is concerned that this bill, which will strengthen the rights and powers of unions in this province, is being rushed through without proper consultation.
