Federal, provincial and territorial ministers of finance will be meeting on Dec. 20 to discuss Canada’s retirement income system, including enhancements to the Canada Pension Plan (CPP). CRFA is concerned about payroll tax increases if the CPP is expanded. Three-quarters of the provinces with three-quarters of the population must agree before any changes can be made to the CPP. As a result, CRFA is urging Ontario’s Minister of Finance to oppose changes to CPP that would result in payroll tax increases for the foodservice industry. CRFA is also asking the Minister to consider re-indexing the year’s basic exemption (YBE) which would reduce the payroll tax burden for lower income workers and their employers.
